Using techniques from the fields of Engineering and Linguistics, researchers from USC and UCLA have adapted speech recognition and pronunciation evaluation methods to Tball's automatic literacy assessment task. Their innovations have been driven toward:
- Deriving statistical rules for expected pronunciation variants in accented speech
- automating the pronunciation verification task for children's speech using discriminative models
- analyzing sub- and supra-segmental cues to spoken demonstrations of literacy
- correlating automatic scores with expert human evaluations of pronunciation
